Old Hotel Taharaa in Papeete |
Lead | |
|
Does anyone know what happened to the Hotel Taharaa outside of Papeete. I stayed there in 1983 and understand it is no longer there. It was built into a hillside overlooking the bay with a great view of Moorea. I am curious to know since it was a beaatifule hotel and it appears it was not taken over by a chain or other hotel.
Thanks |

Ia orana "rwhrangers",
this ***** hotel was THE hotel in French Polynesia in the seventies! I remember it well, it was East of Papeete, built into the hill with its unique design , and it looked like terraces, overlooking Matavai Bay. ( Captain Cook Restaurant, Mahana Terrace ( Polynesian specialties), Discovery Bar, Mahana Bar, La Grotte Snack Bar ) It belonged to Pan-American's hotel subsidiary: Inter-Continental Hotels. As well as "my" Te Puna Bel Air Hotel I will be missing it , when I get there. Perhaps somebody else knows more about it ? Sorry Uschi |

I was able to find out that the Hotel Tahaara became the Hyatt Regency Tahiti and then changed to Matavai Beach Resort. Can't seem to get farther than that but the Matavai Resort doesn't seem to exist now. See the web site

The buildings are still there but the hotel is not
operating in any manner. There is talk of remodeling it into a senior living complex. The newest hotel in Tahiti is on the beach just before you climb the hill to the Taharaa. The Raddison is name of the new hotel. |

Ka'oha nui!
We need Jan Prince for the true history here--but she is a bit busy updating the guide book, I believe. (Good news for all!!) This hotel has been defunct for a long time now. My understanding (although this could be "cocoanut telegraph" info) is that it WAS managed by one of M. Flosse's sons or son-inlaws--and driven into the ground by mismanagement at least 10 years ago. Anyone with more facts--please correct me!! It is still there and very visible from the road. I understand the rains these last 2-3 months have caused havoc with building on the mountainsides. Dr. Suggs returned from a stay at Relais de la Maroto a coup[le weeks ago--and said that the marae up there was about to tumble down the mountain (as well as some buildings). I will be very interested in seeing all of this when I arrive. Nana, Jan |

This hotel did not do well because it was too far from the action of Papeete for the typical tourist. It was really in the district of Mahina and took a while to get to town. I am an American and I have retired in Papeari at PK52. There were a couple other hotels far from Papeete, even one on the Taiarapu peninsula, but none do well. Tourists don't want to stay so far from town - the typical tourist that is. I know of one small timeshare on the water that is doing well in this district of Papeari, about PK55, but you have to know you want it quiet and enjoy being away from the crowd. The Royal Tahitian Hotel in Pirae near Papeete is small but quite nice. Many times I have recommended people stay there. I hope this helps.

Say It Ain't So... | ||
Sorry to hear about the hotel closing. I was there circa 1986. My wife
woke me up late one night to witness a full moon over the cove highlighting a schooner. We still talk about the beautiful view. Agree that the hotel was far
from tourist attractions, but with a rental car, we didn't mind. In fact, we had a great time on the hotel grounds when we weren't driving around the
island.

This pic is from a book published in the early 70's "Official directory & guide book for Tahiti". It was a great source of info along with a telephone directory. The publisher was a fellow by the name of Bernard Covit. I'm sure it is no longer published, haven't seen it on recent visits. Still a good book...I'll try and post more pics kind of dated but interesting... Check out the old tele number...

So sorry to hear of the Hotel Tahara'a
|
I too am sorry to hear about the hotel closing. I was there on my honeymoon in 1986. I took many pictures. We stayed on many of the islands at the time, but to
this day that hotel was the most fantastic that I've ever stayed in. It was carved right out of a mountain side, out of volcanic rock--even some of the
bench seats as I recall. The floors were opposite from what you'd expect; the top floor was at the bottom (with the lobby at the highest elevation), where
you walked down to a black sand beach. I ran around its running track on its "roof" near the golf course. Hotel Tahara'a
was one of the few things that I liked about the "big island". I preferred other islands for their natural beauty and simplicity.

Location of old Taharaa Hotel
|
My wife and I stayed at the Taharaa Hotel in the fall of 1981 and had a wonderful time there. The scenery was spectacular, and we still enjoy the pictures we
took from our terrace room. As mentioned earlier, it appears from recent satellite photos to be closed and somewhat neglected. You can look at it in high
resolution on Google Earth at: lat 17 deg, 30'49.00"S and long 149deg 30'17.65"W. We hope to return to the island someday.

I agree this was a great hotel. I actually did some work on the place.

The Taharaa was built at a time when the local ordinance provided that no building may be taller then a coconut tree.

I stumled across this blog while searching out some hotels in Tahiti that I had enjoyed on my last visit (1979) ... L'hotel Tahara was quite a place back
then. I too am very sorry to hear that it is no longer there. The view of Morea was stunning. Too far off the beaten path? For me, it was perfect.

I'm afraid that I know little about retirement in Tahiti ... I was hired by Kia Ora Hotels as a public relations manager for their facility at Moorea.
That was in the late 70's at which time you could get a 30 day vacation visa. A one year work visa took a while to obtain. The government wanted companies
to exhaust all possibilities of hiring a Tahitian first. After providing an application detailing how your skills were unique and not otherwise available, they
would grant the work visa. I would love to hear more about retirement options.
